Work Experience:

2006 - 2007 Topix, Palo Alto, CA
VP Operations
Topix is a top 20 Internet news and community web site with local news for everywhere. As VP Operations my responsibilities included all IT issues for the production (collocation facilities), development, and office environments. In a year's time I built a team of knowledgeable and capable people to address the many IT challenges within the company. As a team we made significant improvements to the IT infrastructure, including upgrades or replacements of: Internet connectivity, mail system, network, OS / build system, security, wireless, remote access, load balancing, DHCP, DNS, VoIP, OBM, etc., all with an eye towards improving scalability, usability, stability, manageability, disaster recovery, business continuity, and cost effectiveness.

2004 - 2005 Stanford University, Information Technology Services (ITS), Stanford, CA
Director of Networking Systems
My department was responsible for Stanford's many Internet and Internet2 connections, backbone design and operation, campus-wide wireless, operational network security including firewalls and intrusion detection, basic network services such as DNS and time, as well as local network service for specific departments. I was instrumental in the creation, promotion, and planning for both a new electronic security initiative and a campus-wide network redesign.

2002 - Present Coyote Hill Consulting LLC, Redwood City, CA
President and Founder
Via Coyote Hill Consulting I provide network, systems, and security consulting for organizations of all sizes. I have particular experience in corporate, research, and higher education environments with a strong emphasis on security. My services range from technical and planning, education and training, to operational and organizational. Some of my clients, and the services that I have provided for them, are summarized here:
San José State University Interim Director Network Services, mentoring, design reviews, firewalls, security, wireless design and rollout, automation, monitoring systems
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, San José Network security and operations review, network Redesign, performance improvements, staff training
Hillsborough Community College, Florida Network performance testing and investigation, security review, design review, improvement recommendations
Foothill-De Anza Community College District Review and mapping of existing infrastructure, creation of 5-10 year network plan, new network design, creation of technical bid specification for acquisition of new network infrastructure
Palo Alto Research Center Test suite design, automation, vendor interface, troubleshooting, project management
1984 - 2002 Xerox Corporation - Overview (details presented below, by year)
My responsibilities and experience with Xerox spans design, engineering, programming, prototyping, evaluation, troubleshooting, research, development, infrastructure, security, project management, management, and operations with particular expertise in distributed systems, LAN and WAN networking, communications, protocols, protocol stacks, performance analysis, network monitoring, network management, technical oversight and technical leadership.

2001 - 2002 Xerox, Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Palo Alto, CA
Chief Technologist of Technical Infrastructure and Systems Development
Senior Network Scientist
PARC Network Manager

As Chief Technologist of Technical Infrastructure and Systems Development (TISD) I was responsible for the technical oversight, direction, and planning for all of PARC's Networking, Computing, and Telecom infrastructure and systems. This includes providing the technical leadership and direction for the approximately two dozen TISD staff.

As Senior Network Scientist I conducted research in Networks, Network Operations, Network Management, Network Monitoring, Communications, Distributed Systems, and Infrastructure.

As PARC's Network Manager I had direct operational responsibility for PARC's Network and the Network Support Staff.

1991 - 2001 Xerox, Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Palo Alto, CA
Member of the Research Staff - Network Scientist & PARC Network Manager
Primary functions include:

Some key projects:
New Network Designed, deployed, and manage a complete replacement of the center's networking infrastructure. This new network is very high performance, flexible, and robust. It supports 10/100 mbps and gigabit Ethernet, 100% switching, hardware routing at switching speeds, "universal port" intelligent VLANs, and multicast. Robustness is central to the design at virtually all levels. Custom network management greatly reduces workload by automating many tasks that typically require a sizable network support staff.
Wireless Design, test, and deploy a new center-wide wireless network access using the 802.11b standard with an emphasis on coverage, performance, and security.
Web Tools Designed and implemented a web-based network management system that integrates a wide range of network, system, and facility information into a rich, unified, yet simple user interface.

1989 - 1991 Xerox, Corporate Internet (CIN), Webster, NY
Networking Specialist
Educate and mentor the corporate IM group within Xerox about internetworking in general and Xerox's network in particular. Design, implement, and release numerous tools to monitor, track, and troubleshoot services, traffic, hosts, etc.
1986 - 1989 Xerox, Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Palo Alto, CA
Member of the Research Staff - Networking and Distributed Systems Group, Computer Science Laboratory
Guidance, planning, support, operation, troubleshooting, and characterization of the Xerox Internet at all levels of multiple protocols and services (routing, addressing, naming, time, mail, filing, printing, etc.). Build, deploy, manage, and maintain our own multi-protocol routers throughout the corporation. Investigate, design, and implement T1 communications within Xerox. Redesign of the Clearinghouse global distributed name and registration database.
1984 - 1986 Xerox, Webster Research Center (WRC), Webster, NY
Member of the Research Staff - Technical Analyst
Plan, test, manage, and troubleshoot the Research and Corporate Internets. Involved with the lower and upper layers of protocols, standard network services: mail, filing, printing, etc. Involved with the planning and overseeing of internet topology and operational problems and issues. Perform testing and troubleshooting of network related software. Implement tools for network observation and evaluation. Address mainframe and microcomputer network problems for other groups within WRC.
1982 - 1986 Data Frontiers, Inc., Rochester, NY
Vice President, Product Engineer
Design, develop, manufacture, and maintain a line of microprocessor-based interfaces to connect computer systems to phototypesetters.
1980 - 1982 Metrosonics Inc., West Henrietta, NY
Systems Engineer
Systems engineer on projects related to monitoring and analysis equipment.
